Domestic applicants who recently completed secondary education

Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available. This course has a Guaranteed ATAR of 65.

In 2022, the lowest ATAR to receive an offer into this course was 68.45. The lowest ATAR to receive an offer may change from year to year based on the number of applications we receive.

Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.

Domestic applicants with higher education study

To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have:

Partially completed an undergraduate course at Diploma level or higher (or equivalent). Applicants must have completed at least two/four units of study (equivalent to 25 UTAS credit points) including Level 100 units successfully completed in the Diploma of University Studies at UTAS. If an applicant has failed any units the application may be subject to further review before an offer is made.

OR

Completed the UTAS University Preparation Program (or an equivalent qualification offered by an Australian University).

Domestic applicants with VET / TAFE study

To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have completed a Certificate IV (or equivalent) in any discipline.

Domestic applicants with work and life experience

Applicants without senior secondary, tertiary or VET / TAFE study can complete a personal competency statement.

Applicants may be eligible for an offer if they have relevant work and / or life experiences which demonstrate a capacity to succeed in this course.

All international students will need to meet the minimum English Language Requirements, University General Entry Requirements and any course specific requirements such as pre-requisite subjects, if applicable.

This degree requires an IELTS (Academic) of 6.0, with no individual band less than 5.5, or a PTE Academic score of 50, with no score lower than 42 or equivalent.

For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided. See the English Language Requirements page for more information.

Admission to undergraduate courses at the University of Tasmania requires the completion of qualifications equivalent to a 12th year of education in Australia.

You can also meet the General Entry Requirement for this course with the following qualifications or prior studies:

If you have not met a required pre-requisite, you will need to complete a University of Tasmania Foundation Studies Program before you start your course.

Entry to the BBus Honours program is open to students who have completed the Bachelor of Business (or equivalent approved qualification) with an average of distinction or higher in at least 50% of the final year units of the pass degree.

Honours candidates in Management require an average of credit or higher for the 200 and 300 level units forming the relevant major(s) in their degree. Candidates in Management must also have passed the unit BMA331 Marketing Research or an acceptable equivalent unit.

Admission to Honours courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor's degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects and the English language requirements to be eligible for an offer. Admission is conditional on research project and supervisor availability.

English Language Requirements

For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided. See the English Language Requirements page for more information.

Course Specific Requirements

Entry to the Bachelor of Business Honours program is open to students who have completed the Bachelor of Business (or equivalent approved qualification) with an average of distinction or higher in at least 50% of the final year units of the pass degree.

Honours candidates in Management require an average of credit or higher for the 200 and 300 level units forming the relevant major(s) in their degree. Candidates in Management must also have passed the unit BMA331 Marketing Research or an acceptable equivalent unit.

All applicants are required to provide a non-academic personal statement which is used to assist in the selection of students into all Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses at the University of Tasmania.

This statement is submitted through the Non-Academic Capability Assessment Tool (NACAT) after you have completed your application and is used in conjunction with your ATAR score (or equivalent alternative entry.) All applicants must satisfactorily complete the NACAT before they will be provided with an offer into the course.

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teaching Education.

Prior to undertaking their final Professional Experience placement, Master of Teaching students are required to complete the Literacy and Numeracy

International Students

In addition to the entry requirements listed above, international students who are nationals of a country where English is NOT the official language, evidence of an IELTS or TOEFL test must be provided. The Master of Teaching requires an (IELTS) average of 7.5 with no band lower than 7.0 and Listening and Speaking at 8.0.

Course participation requirements

This course includes compulsory work placements. All students must meet the course's Safety in Practice Requirements before their first placement. This includes external clearances to work with children and vulnerable people. The safety in practice requirements are completed separately to the course application.

Bachelor's degree in a related field:

A bachelor's degree other than in Social Work from the University of Tasmania or approved tertiary institution with:

- a major or equivalent in a related field such as social sciences, behavioural sciences, psychology, nursing or education.

- a minimum of 8 units (100 credit points) or equivalent in the studies of society and the studies of behavioural or psychological sciences. Of these units, at least one must be in the social sciences and at least one unit in behavioural and psychological sciences.

- these 8 units (100 credit points) must have been completed within 10 years of admission to the Master of Social Work (Qualifying)

Students with a bachelor's degree in a non-related field:

Bachelor's degree in a non-related field may complete a pathway into the Master of Social Work (Qualifying) by completing either:

- 8 units (100 credit points) from the Bachelor of Social Work with Honours, comprising 4 units (50 credit points) of Core units at Introductory (100) level and 4 units (50 credit points) of Core units at Intermediate level (200) or;

- In addition to holding a completed bachelor degree, the Diploma of Arts which include 100 credit points as per the Bachelor of Social Work with Honours pathway are accepted.

English Language Requirements

IELTS (Academic) 7.0 (no individual band less than 7.0) - no other equivalencies will be accepted. Applicants will be required to meet this requirement prior to commencing a pathway into their Social Work program.

This course does not use ATAR as part of the admission process. To be an eligible for an offer, applicants must have completed the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) or an equivalent qualification.

Domestic applicants with higher education study

You must have completed at least one unit of study (equivalent to 12.5 UTAS credit points), at 100 level or higher and which may include 100 level units completed in the UTAS Diploma of University Studies. The entrance requirements for the Psychology Honours Program include a Bachelor's Degree (BA, BSc, BPsychSc, BBehavSc or equivalent) with a three-year sequence in Psychology accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council, and a good academic record. Applicants are expected to have a substantial background in psychology, including statistical methods. Applicants who have completed their undergraduate studies at the University of Tasmania will have completed the twelve APAC accredited psychology units (four each at 100, 200 and 300 level).

Applicants should note that meeting minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee entry to the Psychology Honours Program as each year the number of applicants greatly exceeds the number of places. Places are limited by the availability of research facilities and staff resources. A competitive entry process is followed based on academic merit. Candidates would normally be expected to obtain at least a Distinction average in the 200 and 300 level units in the Psychology major.
