Diploma

This program of study is provided for students who intend to embark on a career in the maritime industry as Marine Engineer Officers on commercial vessels.
Entry Requirements

Applicants who have recently completed secondary education (in the past two years)

This course uses ATAR and equivalent ranks as part of the admission process. We anticipate that the lowest ATAR that will receive an offer for this course in 2023 will be 65.

Applicants with previous higher education study

* Completed UTAS University Preparation Program or an equivalent enabling program offered by another Australian university; OR

* Completed course at Diploma level at any Australian higher education provider (or equivalent overseas qualification); OR

* Partially completed a course at Associate Degree level at any Australian higher education provider (or have partially completed an equivalent overseas qualification). Applicants must have completed the equivalent of at least two units of study (equivalent to 25 UTAS credit points). If an applicant has failed any units, the application may be subject to further review before an offer is made.

Applicants with previous VET / TAFE study

* Completed Certificate IV

Applications on the basis of work or life experience

This course does not accept applications based on work or life experience.

Prerequisites

The following Tasmanian senior secondary subjects (or equivalent) are required:

  • General Mathematics (MTG315115); and
  • Physical Sciences (PSC315109) or equivalent (equivalency includes CHM415115 Chemistry OR PHY415115 Physics)

All international students will need to meet the minimum English Language Requirements, University General Entry Requirements and any course specific requirements such as pre-requisite subjects, if applicable.

This degree requires an IELTS (Academic) of 5.5, with no individual band less than 5.0, or a PTE Academic score of 43, with no score lower than 36 or equivalent.

For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided. See the English Language Requirements page for more information.

Admission to undergraduate courses at the University of Tasmania requires the completion of qualifications equivalent to a 12th year of education in Australia.

We anticipate the lowest ATAR that will receive an offer for this course in 2022 will be 65.

To be an eligible for an offer, you must have studies or experience equivalent to a satisfactory achievement in the following Tasmanian Senior Secondary subjects:

This course is designed to enhance the professional skills of health and human service professionals, clinical leaders, managers and policy/planning practitioners working, or aspiring to work in leadership or management positions within the broad health and human service sectors in Australia.

Tertiary: An undergraduate degree (AQF 7) from an Australian higher education institution or the equivalent standard in any other institution. Alternative Entry: Where standard entry is not able to be met the following criteria for alternative entry will be considered by the relevant Course Coordinator - * Relevant work experience (Specific occupations, workplace settings and industries are more relevant for specific courses and will receive greater weighting in consideration) demonstrating the relevance of the course; * A record of high achievement in any other qualifications or uncompleted undergraduate qualifications such as Distinction average; and * An assessment of the prospective student's capacity to successfully undertake postgraduate study including reading, writing, analysis and research. * Applicants may be required to undertake an interview with the relevant Course Coordinator in person or via phone call or Skype

Domestic applicants with higher education study

To be eligible for an offer, you must have:

  • Partially completed an undergraduate course at Diploma level or higher (or equivalent). You must have completed at least one unit of study (equivalent to 12.5 UTAS credit points), at 100 level or higher and which may include 100 level units completed in the UTAS Diploma of University Studies. If you have failed any units, your application may be subject to further review before an offer is made; OR
  • Completed the UTAS University Preparation Program (or an equivalent qualification offered by an Australian University).

Domestic applicants with VET / TAFE study

To be eligible for an offer, you must have completed a Certificate III or higher (or equivalent) in any discipline.

Applications on the basis of work or life experience

Applicants without senior secondary, tertiary or VET / TAFE study can complete a personal competency statement.

Applicants may be eligible for an offer if they have relevant work and / or life experiences which demonstrate a capacity to succeed in this course.
