Entry Requirements
  1. To be eligible to be admitted to candidature by the Dean or Associate Dean, an applicant must:
    • hold or have completed the requirements for:
      • a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent institution, with first or second class honours, in a relevant subject area; or
      • a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent institution, in a relevant subject area, with a substantial portfolio of published/professional work (such as books, films, TV programs, creative work and/or government reports) equivalent to or greater than an undergraduate honours thesis; or
      • a master's degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent institution, in a relevant subject area; and
    • have a minimum of five years' recent, full-time employment or professional experience in a relevant field.
  2. The Dean or Associate Dean may admit to candidature an applicant who does not meet the requirements of sub-clause (1), provided that the applicant holds a qualification or qualifications that, in the opinion of the Dean or Associate Dean, are equivalent to those prescribed in sub-clause (1).

Please note: This course is only available to returning and current students who commenced a Bachelor of Political, Economic and Social Sciences (Honours) degree in 2017 or prior.

Students need to have obtained results with an average of 70% or above in eight senior units of study (48 credit points) in the subject in they wish to take honours. Some departments and programs have additional prerequisites, including advanced senior units designed to prepare students for the challenges of fourth-year study.

All candidates are required to have achieved a grade point average of 70% in their final year of university study prior to admission into the Master of Education (Research) degree. Candidates need to submit a research proposal (500-1000 words) addressing criteria specified by the faculty, and have one of the following qualifications:

  • a Bachelor degree in an appropriate area of study and a Bachelor of Teaching/Master of Teaching degree or equivalent, or
  • a Bachelor degree plus a one-year Diploma of Education in an appropriate area of study, or
  • a four year Bachelor of Education degree or Bachelors degree deemed by the faculty to be equivalent and of a standard acceptable to the faculty.

The Master of Fine Arts by research is designed to provide you with the opportunity to develop your art practice through advanced research in one or more discipline area.
Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Master of Fine Arts, you must present a portfolio of work that demonstrates you have the level of art practice proficiency expected of an advanced research applicant.

In addition, you must have completed the equivalent of one of the following in visual arts or other subject area related to your proposed research area:

  • bachelor's degree with honours; or
  • bachelor's degree and graduate diploma; or
  • master's degree by coursework with an independent research component such as a thesis, dissertation or research project.

These criteria constitute the minimum requirements for eligibility and do not guarantee admission. That remains at the discretion of the relevant supervisors and departments, and access to supervision remains highly competitive. The University must certify that there are sufficient supervisory and other resources and facilities available to enable your candidature to be completed successfully.

There are three main conditions of admission, namely:

Entry Requirements

To qualify for admission to the honours year you should have completed the requirements of the pass degree of the Bachelor of Visual Arts, or equivalent degree from a recognised institution, with a weighted average mark across intermediate and senior units of at least 70%.

Applicants are also selected on the basis of their portfolio and project proposal. Admission is competitive and not all eligible applicants may be offered candidature.

Candidature in the honours year cannot be suspended nor deferred.

Candidates should have a weighted average mark of at least 70 for the pass degree. Before applying candidates should have an approved thesis topic and supervisor. The supervisor must be from our academic staff. We invite candidates to discuss their plans with a relevant staff member. Candidates who are new to the University should contact the school to be put in touch with someone to start the discussions.

Inherent requirements

In addition to the academic requirements set out in the Science Postgraduate Handbook, you may be required to satisfy a number of inherent requirements to complete this degree. Example of inherent requirement may include:

  • confidential disclosure and registration of a disability that may hinder your performance in your degree;
  • confidential disclosure of a pre-existing or current medical condition that may hinder your performance in your degree (e.g. heart disease, pace-maker, significant immune suppression, diabetes, vertigo,);
  • ability to perform independently and/or with minimal supervision;
  • ability to undertake certain physical tasks (e.g. heavy lifting);
  • ability to undertake observatory, sensory and communication tasks;
  • ability to spend time at remote sites (e.g. One Tree Island, Narrabri and Camden);
  • ability to work in confined spaces or at heights;
  • ability to operate heavy machinery (e.g. farming equipment);
  • hold or acquire an Australian driver's licence;
  • hold a current scuba diving license;
  • hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • meet initial and ongoing immunisation requirements (e.g. Q-Fever, Vaccinia virus, Hepatitis, etc.)
