Overview
  • Is your passion to work in Sport, Exercise, Health or Fitness?
  • The Master of Science (Sport and Exercise) is designed for graduate students to expand their knowledge and skills to apply the science of sport and exercise and develop interventions that improve sport performance, health, and fitness, and assist in the prevention of chronic diseases.
  • Alongside professional placements, your studies will cover many aspects of sport and exercise science, including anatomy and physiology, psychology, strength and conditioning, exercise prescription, and programming and delivery.
  • You can choose between two different pathways of study:
    • Research Project track - This will provide you with research skills and allows you to develop a research thesis through a project in your chosen disciplinary application area.
    • Research Training track - This will allow you to develop your research capability and gain specialised skills to prepare for a professional career in science.

Successful completion of the Master of Science may qualify you to apply for PhD entry.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements
  • 3-year Bachelor degree from an Australian university or equivalent.
  • or
  • equivalent professional work experience, as determined through the Credit and Exemption procedure.

Note: Students wishing to articulate from the Graduate Diploma of Science (Sport and Exercise) must advise the school in writing of their intention to articulate prior to graduation from the Graduate Diploma of Science.

English language requirements

You are required to satisfy the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. If you do not meet the English language requirements you may apply to study a University-approved English language program.

All students must provide the following documents prior to commencing any placements:

  • Blue Card or Working with Children Check
  • First aid certificate
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate
  • Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) Evidence Form
  • COVID-19 Infection Control Training Certificate
  • COVID-19 Student Placement Declaration
  • UniSQ Student Declaration.
Recognition of prior learning or work experience

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previously studied or have relevant work experience. This will help to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.

Career outcomes
  • As a graduate of the Master of Science (Sport and Exercise) you can expect to find employment in areas such as health and physical activity promotion, as a sports coach, gym manager, recreation officer, personal trainer, sports development officer, or work within sports tourism, community sport and recreation, and promotion of sport performance among athletes.
  • The Master of Science (Sport and Exercise) may also provide a pathway for PhD studies in sport science, elite sport performance, and clinical disciplines.

To complete this degree students must complete 16 units. Most courses (similar to 'subjects') are valued at 1 unit. To study full-time you would usually complete 4 units per semester.

Residential schools

If you are enrolled in the External study mode in this degree, you will have the opportunity to come on-campus for residential schools, where you will attend face-to-face lectures and tutorials, use the facilities and meet staff and other students.

Note: This Sport and Exercise specialisation includes a practical skill competency component and residential school that is conducted at UniSQ Ipswich.

Practical experience and placements

This specialisation includes an opportunity to undertake professional placements in settings, such as sport and exercise performance, workplace health, sports coaching, health promotion, and in sport and exercise research. Placements are allocated by the UniSQ Placement Office and all students must be able to meet the physical and other professional requirements of practical experience/placements within this degree.

An approved elective course is available for students who do not want to complete a placement in a sport and exercise setting.

  • Semester 2, 2023 - applications close on 10 July and the Semester 2 study period commences on Monday 10 July, 2023.

  • Trimester 1, 2024 - applications close 22 January 2024 and the Trimester 1 study period starts on 22 January 2024.
  • Trimester 2, 2024 - applications close 13 May 2024 and the Trimester 2 study period starts on 13 May 2024.
