Midwives make a difference to women's lives and are key to improving maternal health outcomes globally. As a midwife, you will work in partnership with women, their babies and families through pregnancy, labour and birth and the early parenting period. Our Midwifery programs have been co-designed with industry partners, consumers, past and present midwifery students to ensure midwifery at the University of Newcastle reflects contemporary midwifery knowledge and practice.
Our programs have strong research inspired theoretical bases as well as midwifery professional experience placement to help prepare outstanding midwifery graduates. This program is accredited with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as an approved program of study.
The Midwifery programs are designed to sequentially build midwifery knowledge and skills. In the first year you will study courses in fundamental concepts of the midwifery profession and build foundational knowledge in human bioscience and the normal psychophysiology of pregnancy, birth and early parenting period including the newborn.
In the second year you will expand your knowledge base and learn about women who experience more complex psychophysiological needs. In the final year you'll continue to build skills and knowledge and progress to beginner level practitioners, consolidating midwifery knowledge and skills and integrating research into practice.
A mix of both face-to-face and online learning is provided to ensure you are able to be with childbearing women when required, including births, which occur at all hours.
